![]() In this orientation students will be introduced to Canvas, the learning management system used by Granite State College for course delivery, and gain comfort in using the various online tools and resources. Ĭanvas Orientation is available for students new to online learning or Canvas as well as those who may need a refresher. Included in the sessions is information on purchasing books, accessing student accounts, interpreting degree evaluations, strategies for success, and an overview of the website and Canvas system for online course delivery. New Student Orientations are designed to introduce students to the many services provided by the college. Accord colleagues appropriate courtesy and respect.Maintain the credibility of the advising/coaching process.Support the college’s educational philosophy and its policies.Interact with the student with fidelity, about college policies and procedures.Advocate for the student with other offices.Enhance the student’s ability to make decisions.Seek the best possible education for the student.The eight principles were formulated by the National Academic Advising Association and are as follows: The College has adopted a set of eight ethical principles based on four fundamental ethical ideals (Utility, Justice, Respect for Persons, and Fidelity) to guide staff actions with students. Obtain education and training (NACADA Core Values, 2004 and Nutt, 2007, Legal and Ethical Issues).Learn about and understand the institutional mission, culture, and expectations and interpret the institution’s values, mission, and goals to the community.Treat students and colleagues with respect.Impart accurate information while complying with institutional policies and rules (CAS Standards 2005).Recognize their advising expertise and refer students when necessary.Avoid any personal conflict of interest so advisors can deal objectively and impartially with issues.Serve students on a fair and equitable basis.Maintain confidentiality (compliance with FERPA).Granite State College Academic Advising follows the guidelines by the Council for Academic Standards and National Academic Advising Association to: Ultimately, the responsibility to make decisions that affect their life goals is that of the student. Using the framework of the Appreciative Advising model, Academic Advisors build trust and rapport with students, help students uncover their strengths and skills, and co-construct action plans to reach goals. Advising is a shared partnership between a student and Academic Advisor with the purpose of reaching education and career goals. The purpose is to guide students to become self-directed learners and decision makers. Through advising, students are empowered to develop and implement sound academic plans that are consistent with their personal values, goals and career plans.
